This is a photo of Grace, a uni student. I met her a year ago during the height of COVID-19 at a café where she worked, and I asked her if her uni had closed campus. She informed me that she had decided to drop her uni studies because she was really unhappy and didn’t know what she wanted to do.
I found out she was studying Medical Science but she found it was soul draining. So we started a career journey by exploring her top 10 strengths, and then mapping those strengths to careers that interested her. Grace did all her homework with 110% effort. She came up with 10 career choices and we analysed each one, then narrowed down the number to two - Marketing and Design.
I introduced her to a few professional colleagues who could give her advice in those fields. We did some research on which universities she was interested in and what subjects they offered, but the best part was that in our discussions she lit up when she talked about her 2 month exchange stint in New Zealand. Even though we were in the height of COVID-19, she got really excited at the idea of studying in NZ and why not? We then researched NZ universities, their fee structures, visa requirements, student accommodation and you know what? I was proud that Grace grabbed the bull by the horns.
Today I caught up with her on Zoom to find out how she’s going in her first term at VICTORIA UNIVERSITY in WELLINGTON NZ and she was BEAMING. Not because she had just completed her 14 days of quarantine but because she was so pleased to tell me how much she LOVED her Design courses in her first weeks of class.
She is living in student accommodation with 2 other female students, and she is so happy she took the leap and went after her dream. Super happy for you Grace!
